The Magic Staircase - Chapter 3

The farmers were so happy and expressed their gratitude towards Jack. They thanked him for completing their work and told him that they could rest for the entire evening because of his help.

Jack politely asked them why they had initially hidden from him. One of the old farmers explained that they had thought he was a goblin. The goblins lived in the nearby woods and would often come to their houses to steal things. The villagers were unable to stand up against them as the goblins were incredibly fast. They would only come at dawn, while the villagers were still asleep, take everything, and disappear.

One of the old farmers explained that
they had thought he was a goblin

Feeling sorry for the farmers, Jack asked for directions to the goblin cave. However, the farmers warned him that it was too dangerous to go there. Nevertheless, Jack insisted that he would retrieve their stolen things and set out towards the cave. While on his way, he wondered why the goblins only came in the morning before sunrise. But he couldn't come up with any reasonable explanation.

After walking down the road, Jack reached the edge of the village, where the forest began. He went into the woods and eventually found an open area. In the middle, there was an old house. Jack approached the house and saw that the doors were closed, and the windows were covered with papers to prevent any light from entering the house. Jack looked through the keyhole and saw that the goblins were sleeping inside,They had big, crooked noses and sharp, pointy teeth. And he saw that all the stolen items piled up in a corner.

Jack realized that the goblins were afraid of sunlight, which was why they only came out in the morning. He remembered that the door he had entered earlier had a rooster sign on it. He climbed up to the roof of the house and loudly mimicked a rooster's crow.

"Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo!! Cock-a-doodle-doo!!!"

The goblins woke up, thinking it was morning and quickly left the house to rob the village. Jack climbed down the chimney and locked the door, leaving the confused goblins behind. They were burnt by the sunlight and ran away into the forest, never to return again.

They had big, crooked noses
 and sharp, pointy teeth

Jack returned to the village and informed the people that the goblins were gone and that they could retrieve their stolen items. Overjoyed, they thanked Jack and asked him to stay with them. However, Jack declined and said he had to leave. The farmers gifted him with a lot of food and fruits to express their gratitude. When Jack returned to his room, the magical staircase had disappeared again. But every morning, their kitchen was filled with fresh milk, cheese, and food,
And only Jack knew who was doing it.
